INTRODUCTION

INTRODUCTION

Situated within an old town of Taiwan, which desperately needs gentrification, New Taipei City is going through a phase of urban renewal. The developer of Art Deco One acquired the address of an old landmark department store within the city, in hope to create a new town center. LI&Co. selected one of the biggest model unit within the premium residential complex. For this project, the design office was inspired by the modernist movement of Manhattan in New York during the art deco period. The task was to reinterpret the style with a new approach, that is more befitting of the lifestyle in Taipei. Elements and design languages were applied with contemporary infusion and modern necessities. Materials, colors and geometric details were toned down in moving away from the heaviness of the 1920s opulence. Symmetry in shapes and arrangements, which were common during the art deco period, were offset by asymmetrical lines and softer elements and composition. The end result captured the spirit of Art Deco, yet the space is relevant in the 21st century.
